What we collect

We collect the following when you use Kommunfångst:

  • Your email address, for authentication.
  • Which municipalities you have marked as visited or verified with location.
  • Which peaks you have logged as climbed, and whether the visit was verified with location.
  • If you choose to use the Discovery map: which areas of a municipality you have revealed. Tracking only happens while you have the Discovery map open for a municipality. Background tracking — when the screen is off or the app isn't in the foreground — only starts when you tap "Start walk" yourself, and stops as soon as you tap "Stop walk".
  • The time you accepted the terms and the version you accepted.
  • If you join the leaderboard: the display name you choose, the home municipality you set, and — if you upload one — a profile picture.
  • If you submit local tips: the tip you write, along with the municipality it relates to.

Device location is used when you tap "my location," "nearest unvisited," or when you verify a municipality or peak visit. Location is processed on the device and is not stored on our servers — we only store the result (that the visit was verified).

Why we collect it

Your email is used solely for signing in. Visit and peak data is stored so you can track your progress across devices. The terms-acceptance record exists as proof of consent. The leaderboard and local tips exist so users can share progress and knowledge with each other.

Where data is stored

Your data is stored in Google Firebase (Firestore and Cloud Storage) on servers located in the EU and is associated with your user account. Your data is retained for as long as your account exists.

Sign-in

You can sign in with email and password, with Google, or with Apple. If you use Google or Apple, authentication data is exchanged with those providers during sign-in in accordance with their privacy policies.

Location data

Location access is optional. It is used when finding the nearest unvisited municipality or peak, and when verifying a visit. Your location is processed on-device and is not sent to our servers. We store only the result of a verification — that a given municipality or peak was logged as visited — not the coordinates themselves.

The Discovery map is the only part of the app that records where inside a municipality you've been. The feature only activates when you yourself open the Discovery map for a specific municipality. Background tracking — when the screen is off or the app isn't in the foreground — never starts on its own: it requires you to tap "Start walk", grant background-location permission, and runs only until you tap "Stop walk". Your raw coordinates never leave the device. What we store on our servers is a compact map of which small areas (roughly 100 × 100 metres) you've been in, so you can see the same revealed map on your other devices.

Photos

The photo journal reads geotagged photos directly from your device's photo library (iOS only) to associate them with municipalities you have visited. Photos are not uploaded to our servers, and location data from photos never leaves your device.

Public profile and leaderboard

The leaderboard is opt-in. If you join, the following becomes visible to other signed-in users: your display name, your home municipality if you set one, whether you are a supporter (have purchased ad removal), your profile picture if any, stats such as your number of visited municipalities, peaks, and total elevation, and which specific municipalities and peaks you have logged as visited. You can opt out at any time, which removes your entry from the list. Profile pictures are reviewed before they become visible.

Local tips

Local tips you submit are reviewed before they are published. Once approved, they can be read by other signed-in users. Tips are not associated with your name.

Maps

The app uses Mapbox for the municipality map and Lantmäteriet for the topographic peak map. When the map loads, your device sends its IP address and the current map viewport to these services so the correct map tiles can be delivered. Mapbox also collects anonymized usage telemetry such as device model, operating system, and map interactions. See Mapbox's privacy policy and Lantmäteriet's privacy policy for details.

Crash reports and in-app analytics

The app uses Firebase Crashlytics to capture crashes and unexpected errors so we can fix them. We also use Firebase Analytics to collect aggregated usage data — for example, which sign-in method was chosen, which screens are viewed, and when someone purchases ad removal. This data is processed by Google in accordance with their privacy policies.

Advertising

The app displays ads provided by Google AdMob. If you consent, ads may be personalized based on your interests. If you decline, you will still see ads, but they will not be personalized. You can change your ad consent at any time in Settings. Ad data is processed by Google and its advertising partners according to their privacy policies.

In-app purchases

If you remove ads by supporting the app, the purchase itself is processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We only receive confirmation that the purchase is valid, not payment information.

Website analytics

This website uses Umami for privacy-friendly analytics. Umami does not use cookies and does not collect personally identifiable information. We only see aggregated data such as page views, referring sites, country, and device type. See Umami's privacy policy for details.

Your rights

You can export all your data from the settings screen at any time. You have the right to access, correct, and delete your personal data.

Data deletion

You can delete your account and all associated data from the settings screen. This removes your user account, all visit and peak records, your leaderboard entry if any, and any uploaded profile picture. The action is immediate and irreversible.

Children's privacy

This app is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
